Transparent Evaluation

Our Scoring Methodology

How TransferGauge mathematically calculates the 0–100 TransferGauge Score to provide an honest, independent assessment of cross-border money-transfer services.

Core Principles

The cross-border remittance industry has historically profited from fee complexity. By promoting "$0 Fee" marketing headlines while quietly taking 1% to 3% in foreign exchange markups, providers make it difficult for everyday remitters to determine which option is genuinely most cost-effective.

TransferGauge is built on three core tenets:

  • Total Cost Truth: Total cost equals the upfront fixed fee plus the foreign exchange markup against the wholesale mid-market rate.
  • Net Payout Priority: What lands in the beneficiary's Indian bank account or UPI address matters more than any promotional marketing claim.
  • Zero Pay-to-Play: Commercial affiliate partnerships never alter our numerical rankings or TransferGauge Scores.

The 7 Weighted Scoring Dimensions

Every provider is scored from 0 to 100 based on a deterministic weighted formula:

1. Total Economic Transfer Cost (30% Weight)30%

Evaluates the true combined economic friction of the transfer — combining upfront fixed and variable fees with the foreign exchange spread relative to the wholesale mid-market rate. Providers with low overall friction receive top marks, ensuring deceptive "$0 fee" structures concealing wide currency markups are not rewarded.

2. Exchange Rate Margin (25% Weight)25%

Measures how closely the provider's quoted retail exchange rate tracks the wholesale mid-market rate. Providers offering mid-market reference rates receive top marks.

3. Recipient Payout Efficiency (15% Weight)15%

Calculates the net destination currency delivered for standard benchmark amounts ($500, $1,000, $2,000, $5,000) relative to market leaders.

4. Delivery Speed & Fast Rails (10% Weight)10%

Considers settlement duration and modern instant rail support (such as India's instant 24/7 UPI and IMPS vs standard bank wires).

5. Regulatory Reliability & Licensing (10% Weight)10%

Evaluates verifiable institutional compliance: primary registration with tier-1 authorities (US FinCEN, UK FCA, Canada FINTRAC, Australia AUSTRAC, Singapore MAS), client fund segregation under safeguarding rules, corporate longevity, and service operational track record.

6. Currency & Rail Coverage (5% Weight)5%

Breadth of supported payout channels (bank deposit, UPI, cash pickup), corridor reach, and maximum allowable transfer limits.

7. User Experience & Transparency (5% Weight)5%

Assesses quote accessibility without requiring forced login, simplicity of sender onboarding, clear disclosure of delivery estimates, and availability of responsive multi-channel customer assistance.

Qualitative Assessment Framework

While cost, exchange rate spread, and recipient payout are purely mathematical, dimensions such as Reliability (10%) and User Experience (5%) inherently involve qualitative evaluation. Rather than fabricating customer review counts or presenting subjective impressions as objective facts, TransferGauge evaluates these dimensions against a standardized, published rubric:

Reliability Assessment Criteria (10%)

  • Regulatory Licensing: Direct authorization by FinCEN, FCA, FINTRAC, AUSTRAC, or MAS.
  • Fund Safeguarding: Legal segregation of customer funds in ring-fenced accounts.
  • Operational Track Record: Corporate operating history and infrastructure stability.
  • Transfer Tracking: End-to-end milestone visibility and transaction status updates.
  • Transparency of Policies: Published terms on cancellation, refund timelines, and compliance holds.

UX Assessment Criteria (5%)

  • Quote Transparency: Clear rate & fee simulator visible before account registration.
  • Onboarding & KYC: Streamlined identity verification and document upload flows.
  • Funding Options: Breadth of domestic payment methods (ACH, Faster Payments, PayID, Interac).
  • Recipient Convenience: Support for instant modern identifiers like UPI IDs.
  • Support Accessibility: Accessible customer assistance channels (phone, live chat, email).

Note: Qualitative scores reflect TransferGauge's editorial audit against these criteria. We do not use manufactured review aggregates or unverified user ratings.

Data Integrity Classifications

We classify our comparison figures into transparent status tiers:

  • INDICATIVE: Derived from published provider fee schedules and representative market spreads. All comparison figures across our current MVP are indicative benchmarks.
  • LIVE: Ingested directly from active provider APIs in real-time. (Reserved for future live quote integration; not active in current MVP).
  • VERIFIED: Reserved for independently captured and cryptographically confirmed provider quotes with strict timestamp verification. (Not active in current MVP).
  • SAMPLE: Illustrative test models used during internal corridor calibration.
  • EXPIRED: Historical quotes past their validity window; excluded from active rankings.

Editorial Independence

TransferGauge earns referral commissions from selected providers when users register or execute transfers via our links. However, ranking positions are governed strictly by user-selected priorities ("Lowest cost", "Most received", "Fastest", or "Best overall"). Commercial relationships never alter the mathematical ranking output.
